Why We Aren’t Going to Hawaii

We should be on a plane to Hawaii right now. But instead, I’m sitting in the car outside Jonah’s hockey practice in a winter coat. It’s 31 degrees outside and I think I see small snowflakes falling out my mini van window.

It’s not fair. The cold weather and the fact that we canceled our trip to Hawaii. But here we are. Both are happening.

A few weeks ago, we had a few health scares with my dad. It’s still ongoing, but not quite as uncertain as it was back then. My parent’s decided to cancel THEIR trip to Hawaii. We were going to stay with them at their AirBnb on the island of Kauai - which they still offered to us if we wanted to keep our tickets and go without them.

It felt strange to go without my parents since they had gifted this trip to us for Christmas with them and the reason we would be there without them was because of my dad’s health issue. It felt like a trip where we would be mourning and feeling sad about the reason my parents weren’t there.

But it also felt important for us to take a trip as a family - especially in light of what our next 18 months is going to look like. So, we thought we would take a few days to think about it before making any decisions.

Well, the next morning, Neil comes home from work and says that he’s just been told there’s an opportunity for a promotion for him, but he has to attend a training that starts the day we were to land in Hawaii. It was possible they would offer the training again in a few months, but not guaranteed. That settled it. We were going to cancel our trip to Hawaii.

Truthfully, it made canceling a lot easier when Neil’s job training opportunity got thrown into the mix. And I think it left my parents feelings less upset about the idea of us being on a trip that we were supposed to take together, too.

So, we aren’t in shorts and a t-shirt this week. We aren’t surfing the waves or looking for dolphins. And to be honest, we are all a bit sad about it - especially the kids. But we’ve shifted our plans a bit and think we are going to use our airline credits to fly out and see my brother and his family in Alaska in May instead!

Anyone been to Anchorage? What are some must sees?!
